Bibhu Mohapatra With Muppet
Totally. First time in Bergdorf Goodman. She’s becoming like Pretty Woman – that scene in Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts – she was strutting on Fifth Avenue like that today. She’s super excited. You can see. Look at her eyelashes. Do you see that? Her eyelashes are superlong like Jessica Rabbit.
Did you curl them?
No.
Has she undergone any treatments?
No. She’s all-natural. Totally 100%.
And what is she wearing?
She’s wearing a Bibhu resort halter dress. That’s gonna hit the stores in a few months. So she’s going to pre-sell it.

Bibhu Mohapatra
Indian designer Bibhu Mohapatra started off his career designing clothing for his sister; it didn’t take long for Mohapatra to realize fashion was his calling. He moved to New York in 1996 where he enrolled at FIT. While studying, he worked as assistant to the then head designer at Halston. Upon graduation, Bibhu went straight to work as design director at J. Mendel.
While at Mendel, Mohapatra started receiving worldwide accolades for his work. With demand for his J. Mendel designs growing, he began working with clients privately, which in turn led to the conviction to start his own line. He thusly resigned from J. Mendel in order to focus on creating his own eponymous label. Founded in 2008 as a predominantly women’s luxury ready to wear line, Mohapatra’s first show was right here at NYFW in Feb’09. He focuses on mixing high-end furs and India-inspired fabrics.

After an earthquake and a hurricane, New York Fashion Week wants to change the subject.
“Everyone is talking about patterns and prints, new takes on dots, stripes and florals,” said Ken Downing, the fashion director of Neiman Marcus. “A new animal on the scene will be zebra.”
And the preferred hue for a nation swimming in red ink?
“The designers I’ve spoken to highlighted the importance of color in their collections, led by shocking, hot pink,” Downing said.
About 300 designers will show spring/summer collections at citywide venues from Sept. 8 to Sept. 15. The weak economy again is a major challenge. U.S. apparel sales grew just 1.1 percent to $193 billion for the 12 months through July 2011, according to market researcher NPD Group Inc., Port Washington, New York.
“Designers must bring the excitement and passion back,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD. “The industry has become so risk averse; they have bored the consumer to death.”
The main event, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, has 98 designers from China to Guatemala trotting out their zebras and florals in tents atLincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. Fashion veterans Diane von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren will be joined by newbies with understated lines like Pink Tartan and Electric Feathers.
“The thing that designers have to do is know who their customers are and inspire them,” said Fern Mallis, fashion industry consultant.
Designer Bibhu Mohapatra said he drew inspiration from the dominance-submission message in some of Alexander McQueen’s creations. The late designer’s exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this year drew 661,509 visitors.
Helmut Newton
At Mohapatra’s Manhattan studio a wall was speckled with arresting imagery by photographer Helmut Newton. Vixens in minimal garb and provocative poses alluded to hard-core bondage. Mohapatra attached cut-out words, including “passion,” “sensual” and “empowering,” among the images to highlight the feelings he wanted to convey with his new collection of clashing sheer tulle and solid black grids.
The cost of empowerment ranges from $700 to $8,000 at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman.
“The consumer is definitely aware of the economic environment,” Mohapatra said. “She looks at clothes as an investment. It has to be special enough to commit to at that price point.”

Fashion Fashion’s Night Out Preview: Must-Go Spots 0
THE VILLAGE VOICE
By Araceli Cruz
It was so successful that FNO is now on its third season, kicking off Fashion Week, and has become a global fashion holiday
Back in 2009 when Fashion’s Night Out launched, Anna Wintour, the brainchild behind the event, aimed to celebrate the fashion industry and its consumers with an all-night party at shops and department stores throughout the city, in an attempt to spruce up retail sales in the wake of the market crash. FNO’s debut that fall was a frenzy of people shop-hopping all over Manhattan, visiting their favorite boutiques, and schmoozing with legendary and up-and-coming designers, who were rewarding their fans with a ton of free goodies. Bergdorf Goodman: Best in Show (dogs hit the runway!); guest judges include Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa, Santiago Gonzalez, Naeem Khan, and Monique Lhuillie. Designers: Alexandra Vidal, Badgley Mischka, Bibhu Mohapatra, Cushnie & Ochs, Joseph Altuzarra, Lela Rose, Pamella Roland, Reem Acra, and a slew of others. With music by DJ Johnny Dynell. Bergdorf Goodman, 745 Fifth Avenue.
Having said this, FNO is a fun night for shoppers to discover new stores, meet celebrities, stylists, and designers, and, yes, get free crap — though mostly it’s free drinks, and that’s totally fine with us.
